About the photographer

Photography has been a part of my life for 20 years.

Around 1977 I vaguely remember clicking photos with my Mom’s Kodak 110 camera.

It wasn’t until ninth grade when photography re-entered my life and it was then I was introduced to the darkroom.
After completing High School in 1986 I began my formal training when I attended school to study photography.
At that time I work with the local newspaper as a staff photographer.
A couple of years later I moved to Costa Mesa, California to seek further instruction.

I now try to photograph with the “keep it simple” philosophy. It’s the photographer that makes the image not the camera. Some of my favorite photographs are made with my pinhole cameras. These cameras are lens less; constructed from a box with film at one end and a pinhole at the other. The simplicity of these cameras and the untraditionally unique images that are produced is wonderful.

Educated with a traditional photography background, I was a bit reluctant to pursue the digital route. I like to think of myself as a “purest” when it comes to the photographic process. I feel that film has specific characteristics that digital capture can’t replicate…yet. Digital photography is a constantly changing medium; I am always seeking new information and am now learning digital darkroom techniques.
I primarily shoot digitally but at times still enjoy using a film camera. It’s exciting to be a part or it all.

My professional introduction to photography started as a photojournalist.
I photographed as an observer. That is the way I make images today. I don’t try to invoke or include my presence in my images, yet at the same time the act of pressing the shutter makes me a part of them at that exact moment.
Each photograph is light, darkness, color, form and pattern as they present themselves to me.

I enjoy very much showing my photographs. The feedback and critique is important for progress. It gives me a sense of completion.
